3 Ways to Stay Hydrated this Summer

While in the midst of a heat wave hydration is on everyone's minds but I know that despite how appealing I find a tall glass of crisp clear water, others may need a little pizzazz to meet their body's daily water requirements. So I offer 3 ways to make your water more appealing:

#1  CUCUMBER MELON WATER

Add 6-8 cantaloupe cubes and 4-6 cucumber slices to 2 cups of filtered water. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours to overnight. Strain and enjoy.

I use a wide mouth canning jar for this so I am able to get the fruit and vegetables in and out easily.

#2  WATERMELON MINT WATER

Add 4-6 cubes of watermelon and 4 mint leaves to 2 cups water. Refrigerate for 4 hours to overnight. Strain and enjoy, it is surprisingly sweet!

#3  SPARKLING WATER AND SELTZER COUNT TOO!
In practice I get this question a lot when discussing how much water a person needs to be healthy. Yes, you can count the sparkling water, naturally flavored seltzer water and club soda (not to be confused with tonic water which is very high in sugar or corn syrup and doesn't count) towards your daily water total.

How much water should you be drinking?
A basic rule of thumb is to divide your weight (in pounds) by two. This is the number of ounces your body requires daily. For example a 180 pound man requires 90 ounces of water daily for his body to function well.

If you want a more accurate estimation of your body's water needs:
  1. Divide you weight in pounds by three, this the minimum number of ounces you need daily
  2. Then add 8 ounces to this number for every cup of coffee or soda (regular or decaf) you have per day
  3. Then add another 8 ounces for every alcoholic beverage you have that day
  4. Then add 8 ounces for every 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise you do that day
Does this sound like too much...maybe you're drinking too much coffee or soda? If you reduce those beverages you will need less water.

So, how do you make sure you're getting enough water? Do you have an tips or tricks to make it go down easier? I would love to share your ideas.

Is it Per-Menopause, Menopause or something else?

Did you know peri-menopause can begin as early as age 35?  While menopause is a normal and healthy transition women experience, early peri-menopause symptoms may not be a normal or healthy and can be a sign of imbalances within the body. High levels of inflammation, a low fiber or low protein diet, a high sugar or high cholesterol diet, toxins from your external environment, hormones from the food you eat or hormone-like substances from your skincare, make-up or cleaning products can all contribute to hormone imbalances that cause symptoms mimicking peri-menopause and menopause. Is this happening to you? Are you a woman in your 30s or 40s with any of the following symptoms: Even though you used to have regular cycles, you are now having cycles that can start anywhere between 21 and 40 days apart You are starting to have PMS symptoms a week or two before your period starts You often feel bloated and gassy no matter what you eat You are more irritable or ...

Fixing your Hormone Problems with Fiber

Most of us think of dietary fiber as a way to maintain regular bowel movements and may have heard about fiber’s possible role in preventing colon cancer but did you know you can balance your hormones using fiber? Fiber helps to regulate levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone in multiple ways involving your digestive tract, liver, ovaries and blood circulation. Multiple symptoms and medical conditions are the result of hormone imbalances: PMS symptoms such as breast tenderness, mood changes, headaches and bloating are worse if you don’t have enough progesterone to offset estrogen. Acne and unwanted facial hair can be caused by too much testosterone in your system. Peri-menopause symptoms like heavier menstrual bleeding, shorter menstrual cycles and spotting between periods can be the result of an imbalance between estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Uterine fibroids and endometriosis can be made worse by too much estrogen. Your risk of breast, thyroid a...
